The British Parliament has approved the new agreement between the United Kingdom and the European Union on the Brexit dispute over Northern Ireland. A clear majority in the House of Commons was in favor of a mechanism that would give the Northern Ireland Parliament a say in the application of new European rules in this British region.

The agreements were sealed at the end of February by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The agreement should settle the long-standing battle over the Brexit rules for Northern Ireland.

The clear victory of 515 to 29 shows that Sunak managed to curb opposition to the deal within his own Conservative Party and Northern Ireland's Protestant party DUP. Former government leaders Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, among others, had expressed criticism. The opposition Labor voted in favour.
